Julia Trechak

Julia Trechak is a singer-songwriter, artist, writer, and curator based in Wichita, Kansas. Her work has taken her through the American Midwest, San Francisco, New York, and back again—but writing has been the thread connecting the different lives she's lived along the way.

Julia grew up in Wichita and moved to Lawrence to attend the University of Kansas, where she studied English and French. During and around her years at KU, she became increasingly interested in poetry, songwriting, travel, and the ways stories become attached to particular places.

At one point, she walked from Kansas to Washington, D.C. as part of the Trail of Broken Promises, an experience that became part of a larger pattern in her life: leaving home, following a curiosity, and seeing where it led.

After college, she moved to San Francisco, where she worked as a proofreader and copy editor. She later studied creative nonfiction at the graduate level before deciding she wanted to experience more of the world outside a classroom. She traveled, then eventually returned to Wichita.

A few years later, another move took her to New York City, where she worked as a writer and in restaurants while continuing to write and make music. In 2020, Julia returned to Wichita once again. The pandemic brought an unexpected period of staying put. During those years, her professional work moved into SEO, digital content, and content strategy—a continuation, in another form, of the work she'd always done with language, structure, narrative, and ideas.

But music never really went away.

Today, Julia writes and performs original songs alongside interpretations of music from the American tradition, drawing from folk, country, blues, and the Great American Songbook. Her recorded work includes original music as well as Echoes of the Times, a collection of Bob Dylan covers that received recognition from KMUW. She continues to write and perform in Wichita, building an evolving body of work rooted in storytelling, character, and an appreciation for songs that endure.

Alongside music, Julia creates custom artwork and develops Wishlist Studio / Curated Scout, a visual and editorial project devoted to finding, collecting, and connecting objects, images, interiors, references, and ideas that possess a particular sense of character.

Across these different forms, she returns to many of the same things: place, memory, language, beauty, history, movement, and the stories we attach to ordinary things.

She lives and works in Wichita, Kansas.
